Reddit influence is the degree to which Reddit threads and comments shape AI-generated answers for a given prompt class, measured by how often Reddit is cited and how often its recommendations carry into the answer. It is a metric defined by blimpp, published here with its full measurement method. It exists because Reddit occupies an unusual position in AI answers: engines treat it as a proxy for authentic buyer experience, which gives individual threads outsized weight on commercial questions.

In one sentence

Reddit influence measures how much of what an engine tells buyers in your category is really Reddit talking, both as a cited source and as the origin of the brands the answer recommends.

How Reddit influence is measured

Two components, reported together. Citation rate: responses citing a reddit.com URL ÷ total responses × 100 for the prompt class. Carry rate: among responses citing Reddit, the share in which a brand recommended in the cited thread appears among the answer’s own recommendations. Citation rate shows presence; carry rate shows power. A prompt class can show a modest citation rate with a high carry rate, meaning the threads that do get retrieved are steering the advice. Definitions follow the measurement methodology; sampling follows the repeated-run protocol.

Worked example

Fifty commercial prompts in one category are run twice each on one engine, producing 100 responses. Reddit is cited in 36 of them, a citation rate of 36%. In 24 of those 36, a brand endorsed in the cited thread appears in the answer’s recommendations, a carry rate of 67%. The category’s buying advice is being written, in meaningful part, by whoever wins those threads. Illustrative example: blimpp benchmark data is added to this page as studies publish.

Why Reddit influence matters

Where Reddit influence is high, a brand’s AI visibility is decided on a surface most brands neither monitor nor participate in. A handful of threads, often years old, can function as standing testimony that engines re-read every time the question is asked. That cuts both ways: an unanswered complaint compounds, and a well-earned endorsement compounds too. Measuring the influence level per prompt class tells a brand whether Reddit is a side channel or the main stage in its category.

What affects Reddit influence

Evidenced factors: whether Reddit content is retrievable and prominent for the prompt class at all, which varies sharply by category and engine. Factors with practitioner evidence: thread recency and ranking in classic search for the buying query, comment consensus strength, and the specificity of the recommendations within the thread. These are treated as working hypotheses until tested.
