Answer engine optimisation is the practice of structuring content so that a system seeking a direct answer can extract it whole and attribute it accurately, with minimal synthesis. Abbreviated AEO, it is the narrowest of the three circulating terms, and the distinction matters: AI SEO is the umbrella practice; generative engine optimisation targets selection, citation and reproduction inside composed answers; AEO targets the cases where an answer is lifted rather than written.
In one sentence
AEO is writing the answer so the machine does not have to, which is when attribution is cleanest and distortion is lowest.
How AEO works
Answer systems prefer the lowest-effort reliable path: a passage that already is the answer beats fragments that must be synthesised into one. AEO supplies those passages: a direct answer placed under the heading that poses the question, definitions whose first sentence is complete and self-contained, tables whose cells carry specific values, figures that travel with their units and dates. The craft descends from featured-snippet optimisation and now serves every extractive surface, with extractability as its governing property and passage retrieval as its delivery mechanism.
Worked example
Two pages address how long a visa application takes. One discusses the process for eight paragraphs and lets the reader infer a range. The other opens a section titled with the question and answers it in one sentence: a stated range, the conditions it depends on, and the date it was last checked. Extractive surfaces lift the second, verbatim and attributed, run after run. Illustrative example of the mechanism.
Why AEO matters
Extraction is the best-case outcome for a source: the answer arrives in your words, attributed to you, with nothing lost in synthesis. It is also where the discipline most often curdles into malpractice, pages diced into artificial answer blocks for machines. Google’s guidance is explicit that no special AI formatting or markup is required and warns against scaled variant pages; durable AEO is simply direct writing, one complete answer per question, which readers happen to prefer too.
What affects AEO outcomes
Evidenced factors: content present in crawlable, rendered HTML, per platform guidance. Factors with practitioner evidence: question-stating headings paired with self-contained answers, specificity and dating of claims, semantic tables for comparative facts, and one canonical page per question rather than competing variants. These are treated as working hypotheses until tested.
