Citation absorption is the degree to which a cited source’s content actually shapes the substance of an AI-generated answer, as distinct from the source merely being selected and listed. The distinction comes from the research literature, which separates whether a source is chosen from how much of it survives into the answer. Two sources can sit side by side in a citation list while one wrote the answer and the other decorated it.
In one sentence
Absorption asks how much of the answer is really your page talking, which a citation count alone can never tell you.
How citation absorption is assessed
Absorption is observed by tracing the answer’s substance back to its cited sources: which claims, figures, verdicts and framings in the response also appear in each source, across repeated runs. A high-absorption source contributes reproduced claims and steers the answer’s recommendations; a low-absorption source appears in the citation list while contributing little the answer actually says. The carry-through observation defined under source influence is an absorption measure applied to recommendations specifically.
Worked example
An answer to a category question cites four sources. Its two specific claims, a price figure and a named trade-off, both appear verbatim in one cited comparison page; nothing distinctive traces to the other three. One source was absorbed, three were selected. A brand celebrating its presence among the three is celebrating decoration. Illustrative example of the mechanism.
Why citation absorption matters
Absorption is the difference between visibility and influence. Optimising for citation counts alone rewards being listed; optimising for absorption rewards being reproduced, which is what moves what buyers are told. It also reframes content work: the goal is not pages that get referenced but claims that get carried, which favours precise, quotable, well-evidenced statements over comprehensive prose.
What affects absorption
Evidenced factors: the selection-versus-absorption gap itself is documented in the research literature as a real and measurable property of generated answers. Factors with practitioner evidence: the specificity and self-containment of a source’s claims, the presence of concrete figures and verdicts rather than hedged narrative, and alignment between the source’s framing and the question’s intent. These are treated as working hypotheses until tested.
