Query fan-out is the process by which an AI search system expands a single query into multiple related sub-queries and retrieves results for each before composing one answer. Google describes this behaviour in its own guidance for generative features: the systems issue related searches beyond the literal words typed, which is why an answer can cite pages that never ranked for the original query.

How query fan-out works

When a user asks a broad or multi-part question, the system decomposes it into narrower sub-queries covering the aspects a good answer needs, retrieves candidate sources for each, then synthesises one response from the pooled results. The decomposition is invisible to the user and varies between runs, which contributes directly to citation volatility. The retrieved candidates then pass through source selection before any of them influence or appear in the answer.

Worked example

A buyer asks an engine for the best running shoes for flat feet. Behind the answer, the system might issue sub-queries covering arch support technology, stability shoe comparisons, prices, and recent reviews for specific models. A specialist page that answers only the arch-support sub-query brilliantly can be cited in the final answer despite never ranking for the original phrase. Why query fan-out matters

Fan-out changes what a content strategy is for. Under classic search, one page targeted one query; under fan-out, an answer is assembled from pages that each serve a fragment of the question. Covering a topic’s natural sub-questions precisely, with each answer extractable on its own, gives a domain more routes into the composed answer. It also explains why thin pages chasing every phrasing variation fail: the engine is not matching phrasings, it is gathering substance, and Google’s guidance explicitly warns against producing scaled variant pages for generative features.

What affects a domain’s fan-out coverage

Evidenced factors: crawlability and indexability of the pages serving each sub-topic, per platform guidance. Factors with practitioner evidence: how completely a domain’s pages cover the sub-questions of its category, the extractability of each page’s core answer, and topical depth signals that make a domain a plausible candidate for multiple sub-queries at once. These are treated as working hypotheses until tested.
