Executive summary

Prusa led the US desktop 3D printing benchmark, appearing in 28.06% of captured AI responses and recording a 14.23% first-recommendation rate. But the competitive order changes substantially by buyer stage. The citation environment changes too: YouTube was the most-cited source overall, while Reddit became the leading source in Validation and Purchase.

Key takeaways

  • Prusa led the market overall with a 28.06% appearance rate and 14.23% first-recommendation rate.
  • Bambu Lab overtook Prusa on Shortlisting appearance, but Prusa retained the higher first-recommendation rate at 17.24%.
  • Prusa led Comparison and Validation appearance, while Purchase was much more fragmented.
  • YouTube and Reddit dominated citation volume overall, while Reddit became particularly prominent in Validation, accounting for 18.4% of citations.

Top 5 by weighted SOV

Weighted share of voice produces a different Top 5 from appearance rate alone. Prusa leads at 11.1, followed by Bambu Lab at 7.2. OrcaSlicer moves into third despite appearing in only 7.11% of responses, reflecting its high first-recommendation rate and average position.

Prusa leads. The chase pack changes by metric.

AI visibility positioning heat map

The competitive picture changes depending on the metric used. Prusa has the broadest overall visibility, while brands such as OrcaSlicer and Formlabs perform disproportionately well on first recommendation and average position relative to their appearance rate. The heatmap therefore separates broad presence from first-choice recommendation and recommendation position.
One market. Different leaders by stage.

Top sources by stage

The source analysis examines the websites and platforms cited inside the captured AI responses. Across 2,564 citations, YouTube and Reddit account for the largest individual shares, alongside Facebook, manufacturer support documentation, vendor sites, forums and editorial publishers. Citation sources are separate from recommended brands. A citation to help.prusa3d.com is a source observation; a recommendation for Prusa is a brand-performance observation.

OVERALL

Overall

YouTube was the most-cited domain in the benchmark, accounting for 279 citations or 10.9% of the total. Reddit followed with 241 citations and Facebook with 153. The platform split is pronounced. All 279 YouTube citations and all 153 Facebook citations came from Google AI Overviews. Reddit was also weighted toward Google AI Overviews, with 206 citations there and 35 from ChatGPT. First-party and support documentation behaves differently. help.prusa3d.com recorded 115 citations, 112 of which came from ChatGPT. Ultimaker.com recorded 86 citations, including 68 from ChatGPT. Source prominence also changes by buyer stage. YouTube leads Discovery, Shortlisting, Need-state and Comparison. Reddit moves to first in Validation and Purchase. These are source-presence observations, not evidence that any particular source caused a brand recommendation.

Market citation leaderboard by stage

The Brand Leaderboard measures which products and brands appear most often in AI responses, how frequently they are selected first, and where they tend to appear in recommendation lists. The overall table is ranked by appearance rate. Stage tables apply the same approach separately to Discovery, Shortlisting, Need-state, Comparison, Validation and Purchase. Because the benchmark spans several 3D-printing categories, the extracted entities include printer manufacturers alongside slicers, materials and related products.

Prompts covered for each stage

The 250-prompt benchmark covers six stages of the buying journey. Discovery establishes category understanding. Shortlisting asks for recommended products. Need-state introduces specific applications and constraints. Comparison puts products and technologies head to head. Validation tests reliability, reviews and real-world evidence. Purchase covers cost, availability, bundles, returns and buying decisions.

Limitations

This benchmark is a single snapshot from 25 September 2026. It cannot establish whether brand visibility or source behaviour is increasing or declining over time. Coverage also varies materially by buyer stage. Discovery captured 63 responses from a possible 76, while Need-state captured only 30 from 100 and Purchase 15 from 48. Stage rankings should therefore be interpreted within their captured-response populations rather than as equally powered comparisons. The benchmark is US-specific and should not be treated as representative of other markets. The prompt universe deliberately spans hardware, slicing software, materials, accessories and post-processing. The exported 223 entities therefore include products that do not compete directly with one another. Entity fragmentation is also present. Parent brands, product names, software names and aliases can appear as separate records – for example Bambu Lab and Bambu.

Methodology

The Desktop 3D Printers Market US benchmark was run on 25 September 2026. It covers the US market for consumer and prosumer desktop 3D printing, including printer hardware and associated software, materials and supporting products.

The benchmark defines 250 prompts across six buyer stages:

38 Discovery prompts
50 Shortlisting prompts
50 Need-state prompts
50 Comparison prompts
38 Validation prompts
24 Purchase prompts

The benchmark captured 253 responses across ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews: 129 ChatGPT responses and 124 Google AI Overview responses.

Coverage differs materially by stage: 82.9% in Discovery, 58.0% in Shortlisting, 30.0% in Need-state, 51.0% in Comparison, 47.4% in Validation and 31.3% in Purchase.
