Earned authority is credibility accumulated through independent coverage, citations and references a brand did not create on its own properties. It is the asset class the other authority concepts in this Index describe from different angles: consensus is its agreement pattern, publisher influence maps where it is worth earning, and answers are where it pays out.

In one sentence

Earned authority is what the rest of the internet says about you unprompted, and it is the evidence engines trust precisely because you did not write it.

How earned authority works

Engines composing answers weight independence structurally: a brand’s claims about itself are one interested voice, while the same claims appearing across unconnected third parties read as established fact. Earned authority accrues as coverage, citations, reviews and references accumulate and agree, and it functions as standing input, re-read every time the engines retrieve for the category. It differs from owned assertion in trust, and from paid placement in disclosure and durability, though in practice the boundary is a spectrum and engines read outcomes, the published text, rather than invoices.

Worked example

Two brands claim category leadership. One’s claim exists on its own site and in its ads. The other’s appears, in different words, in a trade review, two comparison guides, a practitioner’s blog and a community thread, accumulated over two years. Across repeated runs, engines recommend the second and cite its coverage; the first is mentioned occasionally and endorsed never. Same claim, different ownership of the evidence. Illustrative example of the mechanism.

Why earned authority matters

It is the binding constraint on the commercial outcomes. Owned-site work can win citations for definitional and branded questions, but recommendation on unbranded buying questions runs through what independent sources say, which is why authority strategies that never leave the brand’s own domain plateau. It compounds and it persists: a strong review keeps testifying for years. The same durability applies to earned criticism, which is what makes reputation repair slow and prevention cheap.

What affects earned authority

Evidenced factors: answers are synthesised from retrieved third-party material, which is what gives independent evidence its structural weight. Factors with practitioner evidence: the volume, independence and agreement of coverage, its spread across source types, its recency, and the specificity of what it says. These are treated as working hypotheses until tested.
