Publisher influence is the weight a specific publication’s coverage carries in AI-generated answers within a topic area, reflected in citation frequency and in how its claims are reproduced. It is source influence resolved to a named outlet, and it is unevenly distributed: in most categories a short list of publications supplies a disproportionate share of what answers cite and say.

In one sentence

Publisher influence identifies which specific outlets are writing your category’s AI answers, which is the outreach target list most brands never build.

How publisher influence is assessed

Two observations per publication, across repeated runs on a category prompt set. Citation frequency: how often the outlet’s domain appears among cited sources. Reproduction: how often the outlet’s specific claims, rankings and verdicts appear in answer substance, whether or not it is cited that run, which is absorption applied to a named source. The pair separates outlets that decorate answers from outlets that write them, and both are reported with denominators per the repeated-run protocol.

Worked example

Across 100 responses to a category prompt set, one trade publication is cited in 22 and its published ranking order is echoed in 31, including runs where it goes uncited. A national outlet with far higher general authority is cited three times and echoed in none. For this category, the trade title is the answer-writing publication, and a placement there is worth more than prestige elsewhere. Illustrative example: blimpp benchmark data is added to this page as studies publish.

Why publisher influence matters

It converts PR from a prestige exercise into a targeting exercise. General domain authority is a poor proxy for answer influence, which is category-specific and measurable; the outlets worth pitching, correcting or appearing in are the ones whose claims demonstrably carry into answers. It also prices coverage rationally: a review in an answer-writing publication functions as standing input to every future answer, which is a different asset class from a one-day traffic spike.

What affects a publisher’s influence

Evidenced factors: repeated selection of the publisher’s pages for the category’s retrieval, observable directly in citation sets. Factors with practitioner evidence: the directness of its verdicts, freshness and update cadence of its category pages, its perceived independence, and the density of specific extractable claims in its coverage. These are treated as working hypotheses until tested.
